Welfare Reforms – further information from the Debt Strand at The Crossway – Two

PIP – Personal Independence Payment
Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is to be replaced by Personal Independence Payment (PIP) for people between the ages of 16 and 64.

All new claims from June 3013 will be for PIP rather than DLA and all existing DLA claims will be reassessed from October 2015 onwards and people will be asked to claim PIP instead.

The main differences will be:

3 month qualifying period (for new claims)
New assessment criteria
Individual assessment and face-to-face consultation
Planned interventions
Reconsideration process
Only two levels of award for the care component.

Claims will be made by phone initially and, assuming the claimant meets basic eligibility conditions, a specific claim form will be sent to that individual. If necessary the claimant will be invited to a consultation with a health professional.

Claimants will have their award reviewed regularly.

For more information go to web site www.dwp.gov.uk/PIP or ask us at the Debt Strand.
