A 7 year-old raises money to help teachers in Malawi

Jeremy Thomspon writes…

I am writing to let you know about a project that Isabelle has embarked on and to see if St John’s can help please?

Sarah Down is a teacher at Isabelle’s school and Isabelle is aware that Mrs Down is going to Malawi in the summer as part of a diocesan trip where she will be training teachers in Malawi. There was a fundraising event at school earlier this term.

Since then Isabelle announced that she wanted to raise some money to help teachers in Malawi by writing stories and selling them!! As parents we wanted to encourage this venture – if we could.

Isabelle had written a story about Pikalo, a ladybird, who can’t fly. However, Isabelle said it needed more work. So we talked about it at length on a train journey to London, she had more ideas and the story grew, to the point where I could type it up. (Apart from a tiny bit of tweaking it is her own ideas and work.)

We have been exploring possibilities of where it can be sold. So far its been sold at the school summer fayre, Brownies and to family and friends and Isabelle has raised £54.

Isabelle is very excited and encouraged that she is raising money to help others and we hope this spirit of generosity and creativity will grow further as she gets older.

Isabelle will be selling her story ‘Pikalo, a ladybird, who can’t fly’ At St John’s for a donation after the 9.15am All Age Service on Sunday 7th July.
