School of Mission and Discipleship

In February 2013, St John’s will be launching a School of Mission and Discipleship – a great way to study theology, go deeper in our discipleship and be equipped for life in the Spirit, as Paul calls it. It is for anyone who wants to learn more about the Bible, grow deeper in their understanding of the Christian faith and to develop as a disciple of Christ. We hope it will stretch your faith and equip you to do whatever God is calling you to do.

Is it for me?

The School of Mission and Discipleship is open to all members of St John’s, as well as people from other churches, and is designed to be a place where everyone can learn and grow, whether or not you’re an experienced student. This is down-to-earth, relevant and practical theology. It is ideal for those leading small groups, those who have recently come through the Alpha course, and really anyone who is looking to go deeper.

How does it work?

The School is split into two tracks, and we hope to add in a third track in September 2013.

Bible Track:  This is an introduction to the Bible and enables people to become familiar with its story, to know its key themes and to learn how to read it in today’s world.

Discipleship Track: This track specifically looks at how we can grow in our relationship with God, grow our hearts for mission, whether at home or away, and develop our confidence in the activity of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Life Track: (From September 2013) This track will look at Christian apologetics and will focus on some of the big questions of life that people within and outside of the church are often asking.

Who is teaching it?

Initially the Bible Track will be using the widely acclaimed DVD-based material from St Paul’s Theological Centre in London, supplemented with input and discussion from a variety of people within St John’s or local to the area. They will bring the sessions alive with thoughtful discussions and opportunities to interact with others.

The Discipleship Track and Life Track will be taught by experienced members of St John’s, and other speakers who have insight and experience in specific areas that are being covered. Again there will be a mixture of teaching and discussion, opportunities to ask questions and think about how what we’re learning might shape the way in which we live.

When does it start?

The School will launch on Saturday February 16th with an introduction to Discipleship in a Consumerist Society. The subsequent dates are:

  • March 16th
  • April 13th
  • May 18th
  • June 22nd
  • July 20th

Each session will run from 9.30am – 12.30pm, starting with coffee and a time of prayer. There will also be a break in the middle which will provide the opportunity for people to get to know each other. All sessions will happen at St John’s Church in either the worship area, or the upper room.

What subjects will be covered?

Bible Track:

  • Bible Overview
  • The Pentateuch
  • Wisdom Literature
  • The Gospels
  • The Catholic Epistles (those not written by the Apostle Paul)

Discipleship Track:

  • Spiritual Disciplines (x3)
  • Spiritual gifts (x2)

How do I get involved?

If you would like to join the School of Mission and Discipleship please complete the application form, indicating which Track you would want to join. There is an administrative charge of £10 per term for St John’s members (£5 for students) and £15 for non-St John’s members. However, if this proves to be a problem don’t let that deter you from coming – just let us know and we will sort something out.

If you are applying from a church other than St John’s, please could you get the endorsement of your Minister or Vicar.

If you have any questions or for more information contact Ruth Hassall in the church office on 0121 427 4601 or email her.
