Building For Mission

Earlier this year St John’s launched its Building For Mission project – Leonard Browne, our Vicar wrote

On the night before our current building was opened back in 1960 the then Vicar, Canon Bill Leatham, said “It is my conviction that within a generation this building will be too small”. Well, here we are 57 years later, and this is indeed the case! During the intervening years some extension work and refurbishments have been carried out to facilitate growth and ministry.

Now, almost 20 years on from when the first serious discussions took place about a substantial rebuild, the time has come to respond to what we believe is God’s call on us to make our main buildings fit not only for our current purposes, but also for the generation to come.

We need a warm, open and welcoming place where people can meet with and be equipped to serve the God who loves us and who calls us to be a vehicle of His welcoming grace and mercy. An attractive frontage, a spacious circulation area, more floor space on two floors for our halls and meeting rooms, new heating, lighting and air distribution, a complete redecoration of the main worship area and remaining rooms, and much more will all make this possible.

The timeline for the next 6 months shows how the project is progressing and the forthcoming key stages.  This will be updated again at the end of the year.

The financial position after our first gift day last March is amazingly encouraging and we are thankful to God for his provision so far.

Committed Funding from Church Members                    £2.2m

Sale of Church Properties including possible

Sale or mortgaging of The Crossway                               £1.8m

Cumulative Project Total                                                  £4.00m

Our total budget is £5.5m which includes a 10% missional project gift.

A brochure was produced in March 2018 to help explain in some detail why we believe St John’s is being called to take on this project as part of our Building for Mission vision and how you can be involved. Our desire is that, through this project, we will be able to serve God more effectively in sharing the Good News of Jesus with those around us.
