Give a coat to someone who needs it this Christmas

Coats hanging on pegsOver the past 4 years St John’s has sent around 1000 coats to people who really need them. We’d love to send some more this year.

It’s really simple. Sort through your wardrobe for any coat you no longer need. It doesn’t need to be new. It can be any kind of coat, (or anything else from the list below). Check it’s clean (but there’s no need to send it to dry cleaners), not stained, and not damaged, so for example the buttons are sewn on and zips work.

This year we’re asking for:
– Men’s, women’s and children’s (especially aged 3+) coats
– Hats, gloves and scarves, especially for children
– Men’s tracksuit bottoms and jeans

We’re also asking for (new) mens underwear.

We’re collecting coats on two Sundays, 27th November and 4th December. Please leave the coats in or near the crate in the Main¬†Hall.

Men’s coats, trousers and underwear will go to Reachout Ministries based at City Road Methodist Church. Paul Atkin says that winter means a busy time for them and being able to provide warm clothing for someone who is homeless is a vital part of their ministry.

Women’s and children’s coats will go to a women’s refuge where mums and kids stay when they have to leave their home to escape domestic violence. Often they’ve had to leave in a hurry, sometimes in the middle of the night, and mums may not have had an opportunity to pick up coats, hats, gloves and scarves to take with them.

Don’t worry about us having too many coats to pass onto these relatively small organisations. Paul has a very large cupboard and stores the coats, giving them out during the year when they are needed. The refuge is linked to a network across the city so any coats they don’t need are passed on to other mums and children.

Thank you so much for helping St John’s do this.

Great to see this happening again and for the 4th or is it the 5th year too! Thanks Des and Kathy

Very glad you are able to support these good causes again. The above link does not seem to work but there is more information about Reachout here http://standinginthegaps.org.uk/organisation/142/reachout-network-ministries
