‘One of the things I love about St John’s is that it truly is a multigenerational family, with life represented in all ages and stages. Each week our Sunday morning 9.15 service sees over a hundred children and young people meet in groups for worship and teaching and with a team of volunteers that are dedicated and very gifted. To work with the children and families here, overseeing and being at the centre of this thriving ministry, is such a privilege. Many families are drawn into St John’s by the provision for children and young people, and therefore the congregation and leadership hugely value the young ones in their midst. This commitment is evident in their embracing of quality, regular all-age worship, how children are encouraged to take their place in the wider church and yet also have the space to encounter God and learn in their own way.

Some of the most exciting things I’ve been a part of and you can expect to get involved in include the summer holiday club which has brought together all ages as teenagers to the retired partner together to put on a great event for the children. Also, the Christmas Tour which sees hundreds of local school children through the doors of St John’s to witness a dramatised nativity story. The developing of relationships with local schools has been an exciting opportunity for the church to serve and reach its local community. There is the foundation of a well-established ministry and with it heaps of potential for the way ahead and a new season. If you have the vision for growing the faith of children and families, a heart to see more children come to know God’s love, and the skills to inspire and release others, don’t hesitate to apply’!

Purpose of Post:
• To oversee St John’s work with children and families
• To encourage children in their faith and walk with God
• To encourage families to develop their faith together
• To build links with the local community to share the Gospel with those outside the church

Background and knowledge:
• A committed Christian who is prayerful and open to the renewing work of the Holy Spirit and one who holds to traditional church beliefs and teaching in matters of faith and conduct
• A willingness to work within the authority structures of the Church of England, to be subject to the clergy, and to become a worshipping member of St John’s

What the job entails:
The following areas will be within the scope of the post. The Children’s Pastor will be responsible for deciding with their line manager the prioritisation of these:

Vision and strategy
• Develop vision and effective strategy in consultation with Vicar (or nominee)
• Ability to set in place the building blocks to effectively deliver above

Encouraging children in their faith & worship:
• To ensure that children are taught the basics of Christian truths and practice of their faith in their everyday lives
• To encourage children in worship and use of their gifts and skills
• To liaise with parents and carers on a regular basis
• To regularly lead at services or part of services where children and families attend

Recruiting and supporting leaders:
• To be responsible for the recruitment and regular training of leaders and to support them in developing the skills to work with young people both within and outside the church
• To plan, coordinate and supervise the teaching of Sunday groups, including the selection and planning of suitable teaching programmes, materials and resources, the appointment of suitable group leaders and helpers, to ensure adequate supervision of groups according to statutory ratio requirements and the on-going monitoring of performance

Building links with the Community:
• To build close links with local primary schools and plan and deliver school assemblies and other appropriate input e.g. RE lessons
• To organise and support events at St John’s (e.g. Christmas Tour, Holiday Club) in which local schools and children from the community can participate
• Develop after school clubs
• Ensure that Holiday Bible Club (and other similar events) are accessible outside of the church community
• To support the uniformed organisations at St John’s, to initiate stronger links between the families associated with the uniformed organisations and the rest of the church family

Support the wider work of St John’s:
• To take the lead in the planning and execution of the monthly All Age service and other All Age services held during the summer holidays and at other times
• To work with Toddler Pastor and Youth Pastor to support children joining and leaving Children’s Ministry
• To work with clergy and other staff to ensure the smooth running of St John’s and the development of new initiatives as appropriate
• To work with families, encouraging faith in the home through various means

• To work with St John’s Safeguarding Officer and others to ensure that St John’s meets the requirements of relevant legislation, Diocesan and Church of England procedures
• You will be responsible for the Safe Recruitment of volunteers following St John’s, Diocesan and Church of England policy
• To ensure that no one works with children without appropriate DBS clearance
• To ensure that working practices and procedures always reflect and adhere to current guidelines or go beyond
• To liaise with St John’s Safeguarding Officer to ensure that all volunteers have received statutory safeguarding training within the appropriate time frames

General Duties:
• To monitor expenditure and manage the Children’s ministry budget
• To provide reports of work as requested
• To undertake relevant training as needed
• To carry out other relevant duties as may from time to time be agreed

How you will be measured:
• Progress made in delivery of key work objectives
• Extent to which volunteers have been released and skills harnessed
• General positive feedback

Working arrangements:

• The post-holder will report to the Vicar or his nominee. You will work closely with other members of the staff team
• The contract will be permanent and a probationary period of 6 months will be applicable
• The hours worked will be flexible and will include Sunday mornings and occasional evening and Saturday work
• You will be entitled to a complete day off each week
• The post attracts 5 weeks paid annual leave plus statutory bank holidays
• The post holder will need to provide his/her own accommodation
• Office space will be provided by the church
• The post requires an enhanced DBS disclosure

Nature of Post:
Full Time
Your basic working week will be 37.5 hours and such other hours as may reasonably be necessary to deliver your job description effectively at times and places to be agreed by the Employer.

£26,301.00 – £30,818.00 An incremental pay scale operates within the above salary range and is linked with the annual review and development process.

The job holder will be automatically enrolled in the Friends Life Flexible Retirement Account which is a Self Invested Pension Plan (SIPP). The current contribution rates are: Employer 1% and Employee 1%
