It is very encouraging that the staff of our Cathedral have wanted to embed the start of the celebration of the 300th anniversary in prayer, and also to involve so many congregations, groups and organisations from the wider Christian community in Birmingham, as well as many individual visitors.

There were different styles of prayer and praise, from an hour of silence to liturgical prayer to various musical accompaniments, ending with the Salvation Army Band. Prayer stations were available to encourage private prayer, including a jigsaw map of the world (pray for the country on the piece you have matched!) and a lovely carved Nativity on loan from Lichfield Cathedral. The Saturday session led by Restore was particularly expressive of Many Voices.

No, I did not manage to stay for the whole time!! but I heard a lot of enthusiastic comments, and was challenged and uplifted while I was there.

We can join in the Tercentenary Prayer in the coming weeks:
Gracious God, you are faithful throughout all generations.
We give thanks for our cathedral church,
for its prayer, hospitality and witness.
May the light of your love shine through your people today, that with confident faith and humble service we may, with St Philip, invite others to ‘Come and See’ the truth and beauty of Jesus Christ, our living Lord and Saviour. Amen.
