The Crossway Debt Advice Strand – new volunteers desperately needed to help new clients

The Debt strand reception

Brian Norden and Adele Cheatle

The Crossway has been delivering debt advice and support since 2008 and has seen an increase in the demand for the service.
In 2014 the team saw 56 clients.

The work involves regular meetings with clients, assessing and helping them to maximise their income, reviewing their outgoings and negotiating a debt repayment plan with the client and their creditors.  The strand is part of Community Money Advice which provides support and training to the volunteer team.

There are two volunteer roles within the team;

Debt Advisors – who work with the clients and creditors to negotiate a debt repayment plan;

Debt Counsellors – they provide the pastoral support and encouragement to the clients as well as assisting the Debt Advisors.  They will attend meetings with the clients, always ensuring that a third person is present.

Currently the team have 36 new or open cases – this is more than half of the total seen last year.
As a result of the current high case load the decision has been taken to temporarily close Debt Advice to new cases until approximately half these cases are closed.

The team has tried to recruit new volunteers without success, the team leader Michael Waters is also looking to step down from the leadership role at some point this year.  The success and demand of the service now means that in order to sustain present service levels and ensure future viability it is imperative that new volunteers are recruited.
