The Amazing Story of Christmas

Christmas Advent Santa Claus

Why do we celebrate Christmas?

Stable and starsIt is good to remind ourselves what the Christmas season is really about – the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem (now in modern Palestine) over 2000yrs ago. Christians believe that Jesus is the Son of God.

God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Gospel of John 3:16, The Bible

God the Father gave us the greatest present of all at Christmas – Jesus his only Son. This gift of Jesus is for the whole world to enjoy.

What is the Nativity Story?
Mary was living in Nazareth (now in modern Israel) and was engaged to Joseph, a carpenter. An angel visited her and explained that she would conceive a son by the power of the Holy Spirit.

At first Mary was afraid and questioned the angel because she was a virgin. The angel explained that the child would be God’s own son.

Presents Christmas TreesTo reassure Joseph, God sent an angel who explained to him that the child within Mary was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and that his name would be Jesus. He was the promised Messiah, ‘Emmanuel’ meaning ‘God with us’.

Jesus is born in a stable

At the same time, the Roman Emperor decreed a census had to be taken. Everyone had to go to their own town to register so Joseph went to Bethlehem with Mary. While there Mary gave birth to Jesus. As the inn was too crowded, Jesus was born in a stable. She wrapped the baby in cloths and placed him in a manger.

Shepherds worship the Saviour
An angel of the Lord appeared to shepherds who were looking after their flocks at night. He told them that a Saviour had been born in Bethlehem. The shepherds decided to go to Bethlehem and see the Christ-child. They found Mary, Joseph and the baby, lying in the
manger and they began to spread the word about this amazing child.

Wise Men – bring gifts
Wise Men from the east saw a star and they came in search,
knowing the star signified the birth of the king of the Jews. Herod was king at this time and so they came to Jerusalem to ask where the child was to be born. The wise men continued to follow the star and found Jesus with his mother in Bethlehem. They bowed and
worshipped him, offering treasures of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
