Youth Pastor Job Profile

Purpose of post:
To oversee St John’s work with young people aged 11-19
To encourage young people in their faith, their walk with God and to exercise their ministry

Qualities you will display:
Relevant youth work training
Demonstrable Biblical knowledge
Strong teaching, training and coaching skills
Ability to inspire and enthuse young people
Ability to communicate with young people, parents and other church members including ‘up front’ with youth and adults
Strong pastoral and interpersonal skills
Good oral and written communication skills
Relevant IT skills including use of MS Office and Social Media
Proven leadership skills
Ability to motivate, lead and equip other staff and volunteers
A self-starter able to manage their own time

Background and knowledge
A committed Christian who is prayerful and open to the renewing work of the Holy Spirit and one who holds to traditional church beliefs and teaching in matters of faith and conduct
A willingness to work within the authority structures of the Church of England, and to become a worshipping member of St John’s
Considerable experience of working specifically with young people as a church based youth worker.

What you will be expected to do
The following areas will be within the scope of the post which focuses mainly on young people
aged 11 to 19. The Youth Pastor will be responsible for deciding with their line manager the
prioritisation of these.

Building up young people
1. To encourage young people to mature in their faith and play an active role in the life of St John’s.
2. To encourage young people in worship and the use of their gifts and skills in the Church and other groups.
3. To take the lead in delivering a Bible based teaching programme St John’s Church, Harborne, Birmingham
4. To support the discipleship of young people including preparing them (as appropriate) for baptism, confirmation and leadership roles.
5. To oversee the pastoral care of young people, including the building of good relationships with parents and leaders.
6. To promote the voice of young people within the life of St John’s

Building up and supporting leaders
7. To be responsible for the recruitment and training of leaders. To support them in developing skills to work with young people both within and outside of the church.
8. To plan, co-ordinate and supervise groups and activities to ensure:
(a) that they are adequately resourced
(b) the selection of suitable teaching materials and appropriate activities
(c) the on-going monitoring of performance
9. Work with the Parish Safeguarding Children’s Coordinator, and others to ensure that St John’s meets the requirements of relevant legislation, Church of England requirements and general good practice regarding the safeguarding of children and young people.
10. To line manage staff as appropriate

Reaching Out
11. To sustain and develop outreach and evangelism to un-churched young people in the local community.
12. To develop and sustain relationships with uniformed & other youth organisations.
13. To build links with local schools and develop new opportunities for working with them.
14. To support Diocesan initiatives to reach young people.

Supporting the wider work of St John’s Church
15. To work with clergy and other staff to ensure the smooth running of St Johns and the development of new initiatives as appropriate.
16. To provide informal support to those who have left for university, gap years, or gone on to further education (19-21’s)

General Duties
17. To monitor expenditure and manage the youth work budget
18. To provide reports of work as requested.
19. To undertake relevant training as needed
20. To carry out such other relevant duties as may from time to time be agreed.

Working arrangements

The post holder will report to the Associate Vicar.
The contract will be permanent and a probationary period of 6 months will be applicable
The hours worked will be flexible and will include frequent evening and weekend work.
You will be entitled to a complete day off each week
The post attracts 5 weeks paid annual leave plus statutory bank holidays
The post holder will need to provide his/her own accommodation.
Office space will be provided on church premises.
The post holder will be subject to a DBS (Enhanced Plus) check

Nature of Post:
Full Time
Your basic working week will be 37.5 hours and such other hours as may reasonably be necessary to deliver your job description effectively at times and places to be agreed by the Employer

£25,554 – £29,943 including 9% pension allowance
An incremental pay scale operates within the above salary range and is linked with the annual review and development process.
